Sūrat al-Furqān
Merits of reciting the Sūrah
Do not leave reciting Sūrat Tabārakalladhī . . . [al-Furqan] for whoever recites it every night will not be punished, nor will he have to face account, and his place will be in the Firdaws A’la. Imam Mūsā al-Kāzim (a)
Note: Quranic Scholars say that the reward is connected to the contents of the Sūrah and requires that recitation be done with awareness, comprehension, reflection and having an intention of implementation.
General synopsis of contents
The Sūrah has three main themes:
- a) The reasoning of the people who rejected the Holy Prophet a. This section lists their objections and answers them. It warns them about the Day of Judgment and narrates stories from history as lessons for them (vv. 4-44)
- b) Signs of the existence and greatness of Allah (vv. 45-62)
- c) Qualities of the servants of the Beneficent (vv. 63-76)
Selected Lessons
1) Those who believe in other than Allah Y have a very weak holding (see v.3).
2) When people do not want to accept something, they can bring up a multitude of reasons to justify themselves.
3) One of the regrets on the Day of Judgment is having wrong friends (see v. 28)
4) The Prophet will complain on the Day of Judgment about how his people neglected the Quran (see v. 30)
5) There are people who take their desire as a god (see v. 43).
6) The true servants of Allah can be known by their signs.
Suggested verses for reflection and memorization.
1) 25:58 – Put your trust in the Living One who does not die and celebrate His praise. He suffices as one all-aware of the sins of His servants.
