ALI 693: Guidance and Misguidance in the Quran

The intricate balance between predestination and free will has been a central theme in Islamic theology, sparking debates among scholars for centuries. A key aspect of this discourse lies in understanding the concepts of guidance (Hidāyah) and misguidance (Ḍalālah) as presented in the Quran. This module delves into the Quranic verses that outline God’s system of guidance, exploring how both guidance and misguidance are attributed to Divine will.

Students will engage with the theological arguments that have shaped Muslim perspectives on whether guidance is a selective blessing reserved for those chosen by God, or a universal opportunity accessible to all. The course will also categorize the various types and levels of Divine guidance present in the cosmos, while analyzing the factors that lead individuals away from the True path. Through a nuanced examination of these themes, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the theological implications of guidance and misguidance in the Quran.
