ALI-295: The Nature of Knowledge in Shia Narrations

Epistemology, or seeking the nature, sources and modes of knowledge is one the most important branches of philosophy. The course aims to establish the epistemological sources in classical Shi‘īte theology—the Quran and Hadith—and stress the orthodox opinion of relying on them as the primary grounds of knowledge and a means to reach true servitude [‘ubuddiyah]. The course will look at specific narrations, including the advice of Imam Ali to Kumayl (Nahjul Balāgha), the Hadith of Unwan al-Basrī (Bihār al-Anwār), and the will of Imam Mūsa Kāzim (a) to his companion, Hishām bin al-Hakam (al-Kāfī).
