Sūrat al-Tahrim

Sūrah No. 66. Revealed in Madīnah, 12 verses. 

The name of the Sūrah is from the first verse which refers to the event when the Prophet a made a lawful issue prohibited for himself by taking an oath, to please his wives.


Merits of reciting the Sūrah

A hadith from the Prophet a says that whoever recites Sūrat al-Tahrīm will be successful in making sincere repentance and not return to sins.

Note: This reward will be for those who take heed of the message and implement it in their lives.


General synopsis of contents

1) Telling the Prophet a not to make something unlawful for himself, to please his wives (vv. 1-2)

2) Warning to the wives of the Prophet a (vv. 3-5)

3) Address to the believers (vv. 6-9)

3) Examples of unrighteous women and righteous women (vv. 10-12)

1) Believers need to be concerned that their families stay on the right path.

2) Repentance must be sincere for it to be accepted.

3) Righteous women can be examples for all believers, male and female.

4) Family connections do not matter when it comes to facing consequences of deeds.

1) 66:6 – O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel will be people and stones.

2) 66:8 – O you who believe! Repent to Allah with sincere repentance.
