Sūrat al-Ra‘d

Sūrah No. 13, Revealed in Makkah, 43 verses.

This Sūrah begins with verses on belief and faith and includes verses on action and a program for the human being. The Sūrah takes its name from verse 13 which talks about thunder and the praise and

glorification of God.

Selected Lessons

1) Allah is most forgiving to human, but He is also strict in punishment (verse 6)

2) Allah only changes the condition of a people when they change themselves (verse 11)

3) Thunder glorifies God (verse 13)

4) Everything in nature, including shadows, prostrates to God.

5) Allah increases and decreases sustenance of people as He wishes (verse 26)

6) Only in Allah’s remembrance do hearts find complete peace (verse 28)


Important Messages

1) Not being visible is not a proof of non-existence.

2) Falsehood is fleeting and useless although it seems loud and strong.

3) Keeping relations with relatives is for the sake of God, not dependent on the behavior of the relatives.

4) Patience and determination have value when they are for the sake of God.

5) Sometimes the effects of preaching appear after the death of the preacher, so do not expect immediate results.


Suggested verses for reflection and memorization.

1) 13:8 – Allah knows what every female bears and that of which the wombs fall short of completion

and that in which they increase; and there is a measure with Him of everything.

2) 13:23-24 – The angels will call on them from every door: ‘Peace be to you, for your patience.’ How excellent is the reward of the [ultimate] abode!

3) 13:30 – Say, ‘He is my Lord; there is no god except Him; in Him I have put my trust, and to

Him will be my return.

1) List the various signs of Allah in creation mentioned in verses 3-5

2) Ponder over the parable in verse 17. Write it out and illustrate it.

3) What are the qualities of believers mentioned in verses 20-22?
