Sūrat al-Mujādilah

Sūrah No.58, Revealed in Madīnah, 22 verses.

The Sūrah gets its name from the first verse that talks about the woman who pleads with the Prophet a regarding her husband divorcing her through the practice of zihār. The Divine name of Allah (اَلله) appears in every verse of this Sūrah.


Merits of reciting the Sūrah

Whoever recites Sūrat al-Mujādilah will be from the party of Allah on the Day of Judgment. Holy Prophet a (Tafsīr Namūneh)

Note: Quranic Scholars say that the reward is connected to the contents of the Sūrah and requires that recitation be done with awareness, comprehension, reflection and having an intention of implementation.


General synopsis of contents

1) The practice of zihār, a pre-Islamic custom through which men renounced their wives.

2) Etiquettes of sitting with others.

3) Qualities of the hypocrites and a warning to stay away from them.


Selected Lessons

1) The issue of zihār. God’s response to the plea of a Muslim woman.

2) Allah is always present, even with those who whisper in secret (v. 7)

Important Messages

1) Wrong customs must be countered with reason and proofs.

2) Penalties that are inflicted are not for revenge or anger, rather for training purposes.

3) A private conversation that hurts and offends believers is from Shaytan.

4) Faith and knowledge raise the ranks of believers.

5) Hypocrites take advantage of religion to strike at it.


Suggested verses for reflection and memorization.

1) 58:6 – The day when Allah will raise them all together, He will inform them about what they

have done. Allah has kept account of it, while they have forgotten, and Allah is witness to all things.

2) 58:7 There does not take place any secret talk among three, but He is their fourth, nor among

five but He is their sixth, nor when they are less than that or more, but He is with them wherever they may be. Then He will inform them about what they have done on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah has knowledge of all things.

3) 58:19 – The shaytān has gained the mastery over them, so he has made them forget the remembrance of Allah; they are the Satan’s party; now surely the Satan’s party are the losers.
