Merits of reciting the Sūrah

This Sūrah is the fifth of seven Hawamim Sūrahs – Sūrahs that begin with the letters Hā Mīm.

Note: Quranic Scholars say that the reward is connected to the contents of the Sūrah and requires that recitation be done with awareness, comprehension, reflection and having an intention of implementation.


General synopsis of contents

1) Greatness of the Quran and its revelation on the night of Qadr (vv. 2-6)

2) Oneness of Allah and His signs (vv.7-8)

3) A warning to those who reject faith (vv. 10-16)

4) Lessons from the story of Prophet Musa (a) and Fir‘awn (vv.17-33)

5) Creation has a purpose (vv. 38-39)

6) Day of Judgment; its punishment and rewards (vv. 40-57)


Selected Lessons

1) The night on which the Quran was revealed is a blessed night.

2) Human beings don’t take belief/doubt seriously. (see v.9)

3) There are many lessons in history – story of the people of Fir‘awn.

4) The heavens and earth have not been created in vain.

5) No-one will help each other on the day of Judgment, except one on whom Allah has mercy.


Suggested verses for reflection and memorization.

1) 44:3 – We sent it down on a blessed night, and We have been warning [mankind].

2) 44:38 – We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them

for play.
