Bismillāh.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوا وَّالَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ
Indeed, Allah is with those who are God conscious and those who are virtuous.
Sūrat al-Nahl, No. 16, Āyat 128
During the battle of ‘Uhud, the Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-ālihi wasallam was greatly disturbed by the way his uncle Hamza was martyred. He complained to Allah ‘azza wajall and said he would retaliate if they overcame the Quraysh. Verses 126-128 of Sura Nahl were revealed at that time to console and advise the Prophet (s). He is reported to have said then, ‘We will be patient, our Lord’.
The verse shows that taqwāand ihsān bring about Divine support and counter the plots of the enemies. It is a reassurance to the Prophet (s) to not let the schemes of the enemies upset him, for Allah aids those who have these two qualities. According to the historian Bāqir Sharīf al-Qurashī, this verse was one of the last verses recited by Imam Ali ‘alayhis-salām before his soul left this earth. On his deathbed, after his last instructions to his children, the Imam recited verses of the Quran. Among the last verses he recited were the above last verse of al-Nahl and:
لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ
for the like of this, then let the workers work (Q 37:61).
During the month of Ramadan, one of the fruits we hope to have achieved is that of taqwā. The Quran has emphasized taqwāas one of the results of fasting. It says:
O you who have faith! Prescribed for you is fasting as it was prescribed for those who were before you, so that you may have taqwā (Q 2:183). As we complete the month of Ramadan, we should have acquired more taqwāthan we had before it. We also empathized with others during this month, doing good to them as much as we could. A combination of these two qualities of taqwā and ihsān are thus stronger in believers at the end of the month of Ramadan. That sets the ground for Divine support, as outlined in the above verse.
These qualities should be maintained and be continued on Eid day thereafter. Embodying these qualities means that we would be true to the actual meaning of Eid. Two points to keep in mind about Eid, especially this year, include:
1) Eid is a spiritual occasion. It is an occasion to magnify Allah and thank Him for having guided us in this month. Allah says:
وَلِتُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
so that you may complete the number and magnify Allah for guiding you, and that you may give thanks (Q 2:185). It is a day of claiming reward from Allah for the obligations we have fulfilled. The following is reported from a tradition of the Prophet (s): Allah takes pride in His servants on the day of Eid and asks the angels, “What is the reward of a servant who has fulfilled his duties”? They say, “Our Lord, his reward is that You give him his due”. Allah says, ‘O my angels, my male servant and female servant fulfilled their obligations to me, then they came beseeching me, by my Honor and my Majesty . . . I will answer them. He then addresses the believers, ‘Return, I have indeed forgiven you and changed your evil deeds to good deeds’. (Extracted from Shahrullāh, Hadith 796)
2) This Eid should be about remembering and reaching out to those impacted by the current conflict. The Muslim Ummah, including the mu’minīn in Lebanon and Iran, is going through pain and suffering. As fellow believers we grieve with them and pray that Allah may ease their suffering and give victory to the oppressed. Along with prayers, actions of support and comfort to those we can reach out to would be part of the ihsān described in the verse.
Let his verse give you hope and motivate action. Allah is with the people who have the two qualities of taqwā and ihsān. His support will nullify the schemes of the enemies. It is a promise He has made, and Allah never breaks His promise.
