When there comes the help of Allah and victory

(Sūrat al-Nasr, No.110, Āyat 1)

The beginning of Sūrat al-Nasr promises help of Allah ‘azza wajall which will be accompanied by victory. ‌Believers face many challenges in the world. Internal and external enemies make life difficult. But the true believer knows that Allah’s help is always near. His support and assistance make victory inevitable for those who are sincere and persevere in His way.

It is the sunnah (practice) of Allah that He sends help to His servants. This help comes in different forms. Verses of Quran show how the Almighty helped people overcome distressful situations:

a) Through the forces of Allah such as angels – When you appealed to your Lord for help, He answered you: ‘I will aid you with a thousand angels following one another. (Q 8:9)

b) Through inner peace and calmness – So Allah sent down His tranquillity upon him and strengthened him with hosts which you did not see. (Q 9:40)

c) A diminished view of the enemies – When Allah showed them to you as few in your dream, and had He shown them as many, you would have lost heart, and disputed about the matter. (Q 8:43)

d) Terror in the hearts of the enemies – When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. (Q 8:12)

e) Fortification of the heart – The heart of Moses’ mother became desolate, and indeed she was about to divulge it had We not fortified her heart so that she might have faith. (Q 28:10)

f) Ability to relax – [Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil of Shaytān and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet. (Q 8:11)

When the difficulties we face cause us to feel overwhelmed and provoke a sense of distress, our refuge is to turn to Allah subhānahu wata‘ālā with full hope for help. He will answer our call. We have hope in Him and trust that He will come to our assistance. This type of trust and hope are powerful weapons to fight the despair that can be brought about by difficult circumstances.

Faith in the help from Allah gives peace to the heart. Patience is required as the help will come at its right time. In the present difficult times, believers should remind themselves of the many times Allah’s help has come for believers to overcome the enemies. And the fact that when His help comes, there is victory with it. Reciting Sūra al-Nasr helps with internalizing that attitude. Among the merits of reciting that Sūrah often are the fulfillment of supplications and ability to overcome enemies. May the Almighty make us form those who recite and beseech Allah’s help.
