This theology series explores some of the most fundamental questions of Islamic belief through rational inquiry and philosophical analysis. The first course (Part 1) examines the principal arguments for the existence of God, while the second (Part 2) will build upon those conclusions to study the Divine attributes and the foundations of tawḥīd. Although each course may be taken independently, they are designed to complement one another, with the second naturally following from the first.
Proofs for the Existence of God
Building upon the foundations established in ALI-704 (Epistemology) and ALI-709 (Anthropology), this six-session online theology course explores the most significant rational arguments for the existence of God.
We will begin with the teleological argument (the argument from design), examining order, purpose, and intelligibility in the universe. A dedicated session will examine the theory of evolution and its relationship to arguments from design. We will then study the proof from fiṭrah, considering the innate human disposition toward belief in the Divine. Finally, after clarifying the philosophical concepts of causality, contingency, and necessity, we will examine the cosmological argument, culminating in the demonstration of the existence of a Necessary Being.
The Attributes of Allah and the Foundations of Tawḥīd
Continuing from the conclusions of the previous course, this six-session online theology course explores the nature of God and the central doctrines of Islamic monotheism.
We will begin by distinguishing between the Ṣifāt Salbiyyah (negative attributes) and Ṣifāt Thubūtiyyah (affirmative attributes) before examining key Divine attributes—including knowledge, power, life, eternality, creativity, lordship, and worthiness of worship—and establishing each through rational analysis. The course will then explore the various dimensions of tawḥīd, followed by a study of Divine Justice (ʿadl). We will conclude by unpacking the profound theological meanings contained within the foundational expressions of Islamic devotion: Subḥānallāh, Alḥamdulillāh, Lā ilāha illā Allāh, and Allāhu Akbar.
Prerequisites: This course builds upon content covered in ALI-704 (Epistemology) and ALI-709 (Anthropology). However, it is not required that students have attended those courses.
